The Story I haven't told yet...

5 min read

Anxiety….oh most of us have a history with that little monkey.

Here’s mine. I’m sharing because I hope the story will inspire those not enjoying a great relationship with it.

So....It begins with me on a mission to come off thyroid meds because I decided that after 4 years of taking them, I didn’t want to have hypothyroidism anymore.

(I'd done a lot of research around the causes of autoimmune disease, made changes to my diet to heal my gut, made sure I had the supplements my thyroid needed, had a strong self reiki practise and I showed my body I believed in it by coming off the meds slowly)

My body went out of whack for a while during a recalibration period.

What actually happened is I doubted myself, a doctor (just doing their job) scared me into taking medication again in which time my body was now producing too much thyroxine alongside the meds and had started causing hyperthyroidism symptoms, anxiety, insomnia, all the shit stuff.  I worked this out after about 6 weeks and some private tests, came off the meds completely and now have within normal range thyroid results (that was over 2 years ago and I’m still all good!)

That is a whole story to itself…and the most important part of it was it took me on a journey.

When I suffered with chronic anxiety for the first time I remember times thinking, wow now I really get it. I get how my mum has suffered all these years and friends. It really flippin sucks.

But I remember I made a choice. I had a strong relationship with the divine and I knew this was just another twist in the road, I knew that no challenge was bigger than me and I remember saying to myself ‘Anxiety, you obviously don’t know who the f*ck I am.’

I found out everything I could about it, information is empowering. I had acupuncture, EFT sessions, increased my meditation & Reiki practice, used the breath to regulate and I also decided to train as a Breathwork, Meditation, Mindfulness & NLP coach so I could use this journey to ultimately help others. I did and it does.

I understand now that anxiety is just a tricky dance partner….we’d love to avoid that track but when we are forced together in that awkward dance, we learn from each other and ultimately become a better dancer. A better player at life if we decide we won’t be beaten.

First step… Decision that you will master this, 2nd step… Get the toolkits and then eventually you get to the point where you still see anxiety standing across the room sometimes and you give it a little wink.

You say 'if you have forgotten how I dance, please come over and I will show you.'

Anxiety may sometimes still be a passenger but never in the driving seat. When you develop watcher consciousness, all emotions are only ever passing visitors. This takes a heck of a lot of practice but isn't that kind of what we are all here for? To learn how to get good at life?

I also do things that terrify me because it trains my mind that I don't give into the negative bias telling me it could all go wrong. I left a relationship that wasn't working, I moved out of my safe house, I decided I was going to teach regulation tools weekly in front of strangers while still regulating strong social anxiety and I took on a studio - all terrifying.

But underneath the terror (strong word I know) is a warm, golden knowing that I will always be ok. That is faith. That is my relationship with the divine and it's unshakable. I may get pushed to my edges sometimes but only to be reminded that I will never fall.

As I get ready to start my first Manifest course tonight, helping to empower women into their full potential, it feels like i've reached the point of it all (one of them anyway, another is to be a steadfast role model for my daughter of course) It feels like arriving and I am so grateful for all of it.

So thank you Thyroid for starting me on a journey of learning about so many holistic modalities and allowing me to realise my own power. Thank you my old mate anxiety, I wouldn't be where I am now without you.

And I’m not advocating for everyone to just stop taking their meds for every condition but I am advocating that we do have powers to heal, not just bandaid symptoms. There are many holistic modalities that can help us find our way back to wholeness. I am also advocating that one of the most powerful things we can do for ourselves is to get the manual on how the mind, body and breath work together.

Integrative wellness is the way forward, a marriage between holistic therapy and medicine...and it's coming. The 2 are definitely going on lots of dates and cultivating a healthier relationship!

For anyone struggling with anxiety or mental health, know there are toolkits within as well as the toolkits we find outside of ourselves and... you got this. No challenge bigger than you...only lessons.

I believe in sharing stories, I have learnt SO much from the beautiful, gritty stories of others which is why i'm finally sharing this one.

Have a beautiful October everyone, sending all my love,

Lianne xx
